The Children's Cancer and Blood Foundation (CCBF) is the
largest and oldest charitable organization in the United
States dedicated to the care of children suffering from blood
diseases and cancers.
CCBF was established in 1952 to support the treatment of
children with Mediterranean anemia, a rare, yet devastating
illness. In 1944, Dr. Carl H. Smith, our founding physician
and considered by many to be the father of pediatric hematology
and oncology, revolutionized treatment for chronically ill
children with the first successful outpatient blood transfusion.
Expanding upon Dr. Smith's vision and foresight, CCBF today
supports the outstanding work of the physicians and scientists
in the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at NewYork-Presbyterian
Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Through the Children's Cancer and Blood Foundation Clinic,
the Division is a major provider of clinical services for
patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers, hemophilia,
thalassemia, and other anemic conditions and platelet disorders.
Thanks in large measure to funding from the Children's Cancer
and Blood Foundation, the Division of Pediatric Hematology
and Oncology remains at the forefront of advanced research
and comprehensive clinical care in the continuing fight against
blood disorders and cancers of childhood.
