The Children's Cancer and Blood Foundation, through its support
of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, has
created a standard of excellence in the treatment of children
with chronic, life-threatening blood disorders since 1952.
Children and their families receive the most advanced, comprehensive
care provided by a team of pediatric specialists in an atmosphere
of compassion, hope and wellness. To learn more about our
staff, visit the Doctors
and Information section of our website.
Since our founding, CCBF funding has helped revolutionize
the treatment of children suffering from cancers and childhood
blood disorders. With CCBF support, the Division sponsors
the nation's largest thalassemia clinic, the most extensive
hemophilia center in metropolitan New York and the country's
largest center for research and care for Immune Thrombocytopenic
Purpura, or ITP, a platelet disorder. The Division's physicians
are among the foremost experts in the world in their respective
specialties.
Genetic screening, counseling and pre-natal diagnostic services
complement the medical care program, while support groups
help the patients and their families adjust to the stress
and complications which often accompany living with a chronic
illness.
Given the recent advances in treatment, many of our patients
are living long, productive lives, and continue to receive
care in the pediatric clinic into young adulthood. For example,
the long-term survival rate of children with leukemia, previously
1%, has dramatically increased to 70% today and is rising.
Children with thalassemia, who rarely survived past age twelve,
now live productive lives beyond age thirty with hope for
further longevity on the horizon.
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center
is internationally renowned as a leader in the training and
education of young physicians who wish to pursue a practice
in pediatric hematology and oncology, and co-sponsors a three-year
fellowship training program with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center. CCBF sponsors the training of three fellows
each year. More than 100 fellows have completed the program,
and many of these physicians have become leaders in the discipline
of pediatric hematology and oncology within the United States
and throughout the world.
CCBF research funding has helped position the Division
at the forefront of advanced research and clinical investigation
of a wide range of childhood blood disorders. CCBF support
has helped scientists develop critical pilot data for studies
which have then in turn received significant funding from
the pharmaceutical industry and the National Institutes of
Health. Our internationally recognized team of research scientists
and physicians often serve as keynote speakers and presenters
at national and international conferences, and last year
published 71 research articles, including 20 original articles,
18 articles in press and 33 review articles or book chapters.
