Organizational Overview
The Children's Cancer & Blood Foundation (CCBF), through its support of the Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, has created a standard of excellence in the treatment of children with chronic, life-threatening blood disorders since 1952. We are the oldest and largest charitable organization in the U.S. dedicated to the care of children with cancer and blood disorders. Over the years, CCBF has helped the Division grow into one of the most comprehensive programs of its kind.
Our mission is threefold:
*To support the comprehensive clinical care of children living with blood disorders
*To foster research to help understand the causes of childhood blood disorders; and
*To sponsor the fellowship training of pediatricians of the subspecialty of pediatric hematology and oncology.
Innovative Patient Care
Since our founding, CCBF funding has helped revolutionize the treatment of children suffering from cancers and childhood blood disorders. Children and their families receive the most advanced, comprehensive care provided by a team of pediatric specialists in an atmosphere of compassion, hope and wellness. With CCBF support, the Division sponsors the nation's largest thalassemia clinic, the most extensive hemophilia center in metropolitan New York and the country's largest center for research and care for Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura, or ITP, a platelet disorder. The Division's physicians are international leaders within their respective specialties.
Award-Winning Research
With support from CCBF, the Division is truly changing the way the medical community treats cancer and blood disorders in children. CCBF support has helped scientists develop critical pilot data for studies which have then in turn received significant funding from the pharmaceutical industry and the National Institutes of Health. Our internationally recognized team of research scientists and physicians are leading the way in understanding the way cancer tumors grow and spread, developing a thalassemia vector that may cure the diseases, and ensuring ITP treatments are safe and effective for patients, among other areas of research.
Unparalleled Training
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center is internationally renowned as a leader in the training and education of young physicians who wish to pursue a practice in pediatric hematology and oncology, and co-sponsors a three-year fellowship training program with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. CCBF sponsors the training of three fellows each year. More than 100 fellows have completed the program, and many of these physicians have become leaders in the discipline of pediatric hematology and oncology within the United States and throughout the world.
